Rayleigh Tower, Flat 11, Room 5

Hey, welcome, welcome to me room!

When you enter, this is wat u'll see:-

My room is at the corner of a square building so I have windows on 2 sides of me room.

I've been busy decorating me room wif postcards and photos which I brought over and some posters which were on sale in campus this week!

More posters - and the door comes with hooks at the back!

This is me study table. Not that many books yet... The radiator is on the bottom left of the pic - which I oso use to dry my stuffs!

And the last photo below would have taken you 360 degrees around me room. Not very big but just nice and cosy for me!

Come out to the kitchen cum dining area. 13 people in the flat share this place but we have all arranged our schedules to cook and eat at differing times so it won't be too crowded. Each is given a storage cupboard, a freezer space and a place in the fridge:-

There are saucepans, 2 ovens, 1 microwave oven, 2 sinks and 2 set of 4 electric stoves. The view from the 11th floor dining area is quite nice.

There is a lake in the grounds wif geese and ducks.

Back to me room. This is the view down from my window. 11 floors is quite high. Thank goodness the lifts have been working without problems the whole week.

The other window on the other side faces the campus building. You can see in the following pic high rise towers in the background. Those are the South Towers. I'm staying in the North Towers which look exactly the same:-

Becasue of how my room is situated, I can see the sunrise from one window...

...and the sunset from the other window!

The first few days have been lovely - clear skies, sunny in the day but nice cold wind.

But it'll be getting colder and the sun cannot be seen for the past 2 days oredi. Still, at least it has not been raining.

Farewell feasts!

I'm soooo stuffed! Everyone's been trying to force-feed saying that I won't be able to eat this or that when I'm at Essex! Well, truth be told, they really din have to try hard to force me. I surrendered willingly!!!

It all started on Friday nite when I was taken to this Chinese restaurant where they were having this "All-you-can-eat" promotion. Yup, we had all we could eat, and more! ;-P

After that, we adjoured to Al's place for ice cream wif kahlua! Excellent!

The next day, I met up wif me AHF group again! This time, Mr. Yee, a good fren and a father figure organised a big lunch feast just for me at his place!

We oso had excellent roast pork, wonderful mashed potatoes, curry chicken and fish, chicken feet.... lots more.

I'll really miss me AHF group. It was an enjoyable lunch and they gave me a VERY generous gift - I was so touched.

After clearing up everything, I actually stayed on and joined the ladies. We sat around wif coffees and teas and chat! :-)

Later that evening, I went over to Weng Soon's apartment to open the place. Me ex-colleagues from UMW Toyata were going there to have steamboat!

The hands belong to me ex-manager, Ms Chong who did not allow me to put her pic on me blog. Imagine, a manager preparing food for me!

Weng Soon provided drinks for the nite - I think I had 4 or 5 bottles of this!!!!!

After dinner, I had me final "chor tai di" session wif Weng Soon and Mikes - yeah 3 of us only since KC not around!

After that, we basically laze around...

...and just chatted.

The next day, I couldn't eat anything. Me final breakfast after worship wif me usual breakfast-"kakis" was just a glass of teh-tarik. Lunch was a box of nasi lemak and when i got home, I had to eat dinner as me dad made his curry chicken for me one last time! It was good.

Later in the nite, I went out wif Jon and Jee Lee for a midnite feast!

We had this "ying and yang" chicken - roast chicken and steam chicken

...and this "chow siew yoke" - roasted pork which is stir-fried wif garlic! Yummy!

We oso had pork balls in soup, bean-sprouts and claypot curry pork ribs which was excellent!

Let's see, there's aother supper tonite wif the BSF gang, lunch wif Hoonch and dinner wif family (to celebrate both me dad's and me bro's b'day next month) tomorrow, perhaps a last attempt to try the Bar-B-Q wings 2moro nite, lunch on Thurs wif Jen and Ken, dinner that nite wif me ex-Uni mates... and I still have to meet up wif some others whom I have not fixed a time yet.

So much to eat, so little time...

hehehe. The company is appreciated more than the food, of course!

Road-trip (more like food-trip!!!)

Went for a crazy road-trip wif Kit and Jess - turned out to be more of an eating trip!!!!

First stop (besides the quickie breakfast at the Sg. Buloh "Restoran Jejantas") was Ipoh. We had dim sum at Yoke Fook Moon restaurant but unfortunately, I was too hungry to remember to take any pics. The food was good, tho. take my word for it!!!!

Later, we stumbled across this Merrybrown outlet! It caught our eye as it has swings for seats!!!!

So of course, we had to try it out!!!

Yeah, talk to the hand!

Thereafter, another stop at Kamunting before heading off to Taiping!!!

The stall which sells inter alia curry puffs and banana fritters. Tried to take a candid shot here but Kit is always ready for the camera!

We then took our goodies and went to the food court for more ... FOOD!!!!

This is the Taping style fried kueh teow (fried rice noodles). It's more like the "korn chow hor fun" you find here in PJ and KL. It was good!

We had the Mee rebus oso! It was pretty good as I could taste it even tho I was having a flu!!!! It was pretty hot too (spicy)!

Some people had to be fed...

We then headed off to Penang.

Sunset while travelling across the Penang Bridge. Couldn't get a clear pic, tho. Too much movement (illegal to stop on the bridge), too little light.

We went to the University Sains Malaysia and picked up 3 wonderful but crazy frens! After checking into our rooms (and lots of laughter and noise), we walked to Gurney Drive for dinner. The food wasn't that great but watever it lacked, the company and fun made up for it! We had an excellent time!

Assam laksa! I liked it but had great difficulty eating it. My nose was completely blocked and each time I took a mouthful, I had to take a deep breath first. Then, I had to chew it and swallow it quickly before I could take another breath! Yeah, you could say that my laksa was breath-taking!!!

After dinner, we rushed back cuz sum people were desperate to watch Desperate Housewives!!!

I watched it too - for the first time - and must admit it was entertaining.

Oh, we did fool around and enjoyed each other's company!!! It was fun!

Unfortunately, the students had lots of work to do so we sent them back (thanks again guys for taking yr precious time to be wif us!). And then we were all knocked out!

It took us quite a while to finally get up and get out. A quick breakfast of Loh Mee at Lorong Selamat before we headed back to mainland.

We stopped by Pusing for lunch (ask Jes Min how the town got its name!!!). It brought back memories as I brought the RBS students for lunch here in January this year. We ate at the same restaurant.

The fried rice was excellent too! We oso had korn chow hor fun and fried prawns! Yummy!

Thereafter, we headed off to Sitiawan and then Lumut.

We din eat anything there as we were still stuffed from lunch at Pusing. On the way back, we stopped by University Teknologi Petronas at Tronoh. Jess' fren, Michael, a lecturer there, brought us in and around. It was a pretty cool! The buildings - lecture halls, library, halls etc were all very modern and looked brilliant!

Michael then took us to Batu Gajah for dinner. Again, more memories!!!! It was pretty late when we finally arrived back to PJ and me back to Subang!

Great food + good company = brilliant trip!

Pangkor Island (Day #3)

The final day. Din really do much. Went out for breakfast at a stall along the road, did some last minute shopping and then it was off to the jetty after some skillful packing!!!

Bye, bye Pangkor Island!

Have bike, will travel!

This time round, me bro's family joined me on the top of the ferry!

The breeze was nice but the sun a lil' too hot for lil' Adelyn (in her new t-shirt!)

Along the way back, we passed the naval port and I saw these submarines there!

Back on the main land, we drove to Kampung Koh (wif great difficulty) for - yes - seafood lunch! After driving forever to search for the restaurant of our choice, we were dismayed to find that it was closed that day!!!! But we were told that his brother's restaurant nearby was opened. So off we went.

But after starting to eat, the camera was placed aside. You know how messy eating seafood can get! Sori, no more pics of delicious seafood!!!

Pangkor Island (Day #2)

This day was spent exploring the island. We managed to rent a small van to take us round the island for a quick tour.

Among the stops was the factory where the "Satay Fish" is made and sold.

While the rest shopped, I sneaked into the cooking area and took a pic of the ladies making the snack.

Thereafter, we went to the Foo Lin Kong temple (much better than the Lin Je Kong temple at the west coast which had a statute of Donald Duck and a scary Mickey Mouse guarding the doors!!!! Really!

There was a mini replica of the Great Wall of China at the back.

There was oso a small pond with tortoises which thought they were circus elephants!!!!

And instead of a Disney character, this had this scary looking but nicely sculpted dragon guarding the front!!!! It's eyes seem like they'll glow red in the dark!

After that, we headed towards the historical part of the island - the Dutch Fort.

The fort was quite tiny and had a lone cannon guarding it.

After that, we headed back into town for lunch and some shopping.

After the sun set, we headed back, cleaned-up and went out for another seafood dinner!!! As we had no transport, we just walked around the area and then headed back and played board games. I stayed up finishing me book before turning in.

Pangkor Island (Day #1)

The trip began at Lumut, where we had lunch at a famous fried chicken outlet!

Then, it was off to the jetty to catch the boat! It was a hot day!

At the back of the ferry, on top, we could step out into the fresh air and enjoy the nice sea breeze!

Goodblye mainland!

As you can see, it was a wonderful day!

Riding on the top of the ferry in the blazing afternoon sun - brings back memories of the Rejang River ride, altho this was much safer and the sea is much calmer than the mighty Rejang!

Upon checking in, it was nap time!

After that, it was time for seafood dinner! Yum!

Walking to the restaurant next to the hotel. You can see the hotel at the left background - a big white building. We stayed in a penthouse, which was on the ground floor and 1st floor. This is the way to stay when you travel wif 2 small kids and 2 senior citizens!!! Still, the comfort was a welcomed change from the usual backpackers' dorms for me!

After dinner, we just hung out...

...did some shopping...

...and then went back and chilled in the nice spacious, aircond penthouse!

During my recent trip to Pangkor Island, I managed to snap some pics of the fishing boats used by the locals there.

The ferry I was on made a pit stop nearby a fishing boat and I wasted no time and took a few pics. Take note of the small details like the green mug, the kitchen area with kettles and gas tanks, the many spot-lights used for nite fishing (can even see the brand name!), remnant fishes, clothes out to dry etc.:-

Taman Negara* - Day #1

* The National Park - located in the state of Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia

The trip started off well – we drove off on Sunday nite to put up at a mate’s place in Mentakab. We missed the F1 but was on time to catch the Wimbledon finals at his place. As usual, Charles – me mate there – was the perfect host. He even bought some durians for us to eat during the game and then took us out for supper after the game.

We started off for the Park the next morning – going to Kuala Tembeling and catching a boat ride up the river to the Park. It was a 3 hour ride – if u ever do that, please remember to empty your bladder b4 getting on the boat!

The ride was nice but after like 20 mins or so, everything looked the same. At least we were entertained by the sights of some birds along the way and a herd of water buffalos … in the water, of course!

The first thing I noticed when we finally got onto dry land at Kuala Tahan - a TV satelite dish!!! Balanced on a piece of wood.

This was the palce we stayed for the first nite.

After discovering wat a run down place we booked ourselves in (recommended by Charles!!!), we had a quick lunch and started off to explore the place. Basically, the cheap run down places are on one side of the river while the park proper and the expensive resort is on the other side. There are a few floating restaurants on the “poor” side – which is more like a desert in the day time compared to the other side, cool wif lush greenery.

Lone boat

To get from poor side to the posh side (and vice versa), one has to take the river taxi - RM0.50 one way. Altho I'm quite sure it is possible for one to just wade across!!!

Of course, if you stay on the "posh side" you have no reason to go over to the "poor side"!!! After all, the treks and verything else is on the posh side!

So off we went, across and started our first trek!

Someone once commented why I dun have many pics of meself on me blog! Well, one of the reasons (not the main one, tho) is that I mainly travel on me own and I'll be the one doing all the photo taking. But in Taman Negara, I got me mate to take pics of me!

There I am, armed wif me Lonely Planet Guide book (the map at the Wildlife Centre was pretty pathetic and the guy tried to sell it to us for 3 bucks!!!! Forget it, man. The map in me Lonely Planet guide was far much better!

Mushrooms

Took this pic specially for me mate, Kit!!!

We tried to make it up a hill but I couldn't. So we detoured to do the canopy walk! mind you, it's much scarier than it looks!!!

Later in the nite, we went for a “Night Safari” – where we sat in the back if a pick-up and were driven into… nope, not the jungle but a palm oil estate!!!! Still, it was quite nice. The highlight for me was being able to sight the “leopard cat” – it looks like a cat but its skin is spotted like a leopard’s. It wasn’t too bad – we saw some boars, water buffalos, some other wild cats, robins asleep in the trees, scorpions and even a small snake! We were more amazed at how the driver managed to spot the snake in the brushes while driving in the dark!

Taman Negara - Day #2

After sleeping in late, we packed our stuffs and moved to another place - an "A" hut. Thereafter, we started off for our trek - a loop trail which we estimated would take us til late evening!!!

First, to complete wat I couldn't do the day before - take a hike up to Terisek Hill. As you can see, it's no easy task, steep climb all the way!

Finally, made it to wat we thought was the top of the hill!!!

Excellent view, tho.

As we went on, the trail did not go downwards. It climbed a bit more. This was a pic of an interesting warped looking tree root.

Ah... finally, we reached the "real" top of the hill! Altho it's only 344 metres (measely compared to the nearly 4,000 metres of Mount Kinabalu which I did last year), it was a pretty tough hike!

Going down by the other side of the hill was tough. We were glad that we were going down and not coming up by that way cuz it was much steeper.

It was challenging and fun at the same time for me. I really enjoyed it. We were truly inside a very dense jungle – and it felt good! I always enjoy being in the jungle. Although there were a lot of small wasps like creatures which ensured that we did not always stop for long.

There was one point of time when the path forked. I made the call to take the right path. It proved correct cuz I could see fresh trail marks left by another trekker. But then it forked again. I always kept this simple rule – stick to right all the time so as not to get confused if the path leads to a dead end. After a while, the path almost disappeared and it did get a lil scary. But thank God it was the right way.

It led us to a signpost!

Altho being 2 km away from the main resort at Kuala Tahan and inside the dense jungle, we still had network service!!!! Cheers to Maxis (Celcom too! Digi? Dream on!!!!).

It led to a swimming area – where I did go in in me briefs!!!! But not for long as there were many boats passing that area!!! But the cold water was simply refreshing!

There were lots of lil fishes swimming in the cool clear water!

Redwood forest?

Look at the size of that tree root! Was half expecting to see some ewoks around...

Instead, we had "close encounters" with some wild boars, a snake, some monkeys and birds! The wild boar encounter was scary. As I was trekking along, I heard some movement in the brush nearby. I looked to me right and there they were, 2 big adult size boars, just a couple of metres away!!! The boar eye-balled me and and I quietly and meekly looked away and walked on!

After a few steps, we decided to try to take a pic. so we sneaked back as quietly as we could... until the boar snorted loudly and we both turned and ran for our dear lives!!!!

When we got back to the resort, we checked out one of the hides overlooking a salt lake.

Of course people only come here at nite to stake-out and wait for animals to come. Still, it ws nice to just sit there in the quiet and imagine the animals there drinking, quenching their thirst. The salt lake to them is prolly like 100 Plus to us!!!

After going back and having a good meal, we rested. Din do much that nite - it rained a little and we went to watch a short video presentation at the resort - good and informative! On the way way, we could hear the otters crying out by the river bank - and using me maglite, we could see them, first, their red coloured eyes, and then slowly, their shape!

Enough of excitement. We went to sleep - altho it took me a while to finally doze off.

Taman Negara - Day #3

Nuthing much on this day. Woke up to find all our stuffs outside were drenched wet in the down-pour early in the morning (heard the rain falling butwas too lazy to go out and bring the stuffs in).

We had to grab the first boat out - and I made sure this time that I din ANY WATER AT ALL!!! Just took a sip from me mate's drink.

When the boat came, everyone else got onto it. We made our way slowly and were told to wait for the next one. OK. Fine.

It turned out REALLY fine! There were only 7 of us left - so me mate and I could take one whole row (meant for 2) all for ourselves!

Tried to get some sleep - with all the space I had, it got quite comfy.

Took the chance to dry off me much worn-out but loyal sandals!!!!

Reached Kuala Tembeling in 2 hours!!!! Was dehydrated then! the drive back to Mentakab was uneventful save for the countles number of durian stalls along the way! We managed to resist temptation - and kept my car odour-free!

Had the famous chicken rice at Mentakab (was thinking bout it all along during the boat ride - and it din disappoint me!).

After lunch, we packed for Charles and went to his school to meet up wif him - he was having choir prac. We chatted for a while - it was interesting to be able to walk into the schoool - very nice school,actually - Wah Lian High School.

That was it - short stop at Bentong was the only break we had and we reached home before dark.

The view of the bridge from the Core Island

Not far away, they are building ANOTHER bridge - which resembles the San Francisco bridge, doesn't it? You can see far behind it, another bridge - the Seri Wawasan Bridge.

I was chatting wif a fren who is from Sibu, Sarawak. I was telling her bout my experiences there last year, when the bus I was on had to use a ferry to cross a river. She told me that on some bad days, the wait could take up to 3 hours just to get on the ferry!!!! And yet, here at Putrajaya, she sees millions spent on all these lavish bridges while her people in her home town still have to make do with the ferry services there!

Well, that's Malaysia for you!

Trolak Country Resort

A couple of weeks ago, a group of us went into the Orang Asli settlement for the week-end. It started off wif free medical clinics all over, followed by a movie nite on Saturday. On Sunday, it was the dedication service for the new church building there.

I went there late on Saturday as I did not feel too well in the morn. It was an unforgettable drive there - as I had trouble finding the place - actually, I was on the right way all along but just din have the confidence to trust my sense of direction!

Here are the pics of the service on that Sunday (mind you, just a couple of hours before these pics were taken, 3 of us were sleeping in the very same hall!).

Duck slaughter house

It was after lunch (thank God) that our kind hosts brought us to the place where the ducks were slaughtered and processed.

Warning - altho I refused to take some of the horrible scenes which take place daily at this place, I must still say that this is not for the faint hearted (and fans of Chicken Run).

End of the road. How can I eat roast duck again without this image flashing in me mind?

Actually, it is packed duck feathers. Each bundle can sell up to a thousand ringgit! It is sold to winter clothing manufacturers.

The Federal Court of Malaysia (Court 1)

Now for the first time (for most of you), you get to see the inside of a Federal Court at the Palace of Justice at Putrajaya! Enjoy the privillege which comes free for customers of Holly's Café!

The judges' seats - usually, only 3 sits at a time but for more serious cases, the coram may be increased to 5 or even 7, depending on the seriousness of the matter and the number of Federal Court judges.
